A couple of weeks ago, he went Skiing! Yes, he actually doned a pair of skis, and hit the slopes--of course, he started on the bunny slope, but at least he tried it! He had a good time, but did find that he was a bit sore the next day. But he admits that he will do it again soon.
For his next adventure, he took the train from Syracuse to NYC to spend a couple of days with his roomy from Iraq. He and Koosh toured the city, drank some beers and visited with some of Jer's acquaintenances from Odessa. He had a good time and made it back in one piece.
Other than that, life is still moving along as we hoped. Jer is still doing the research project in Syracuse, and is waiting for a final fitting on a new brace that will use electrical impluse to help with his "drop foot". He can only use them on one leg at this point, but hopefully as time goes on, he can use two.
Enjoy the rest of the winter--hopefully it won't be too much longer or harder!! Take care and keep those prayers going for those in need of them! Love to you all.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all that are still following the blog! We have a lot to be thankful for this New Year's Eve. As of today, Jeremy is walking without the aide of a crutch, cane or any other device! It's a wonderful site to see when he walks into the house on his own power. He told his dad that the cane "slows him down"!

As we go into 2009, we are going to look forward to a wonderful year--one without the trials and tribulations of the past year. AND, we invite our friends to do the same. The year will surely have it's trials, but hopefully they will not be unsurmountable.

As I have said many times in the past, I am so Thankful for living in a small community and being part of such a wonderful extended Family of not only relative, but friends, (I feel that so many of our friends are family)! We have had more support than I would have ever dreamed of and it's all because of YOU! Thanks so much--please continue to pray for those still in need of God's help--Dana and Bobby and for Ron's continued health.

Love
Carm

Fall has arrived

Hi All: I know it's been a while since we've updated, but as one person said--when there are no new posts that means things are going good AND, that is the case! Last month, Jeremy was thinking that he would have to have more surgery, but his neurosurgeon wants to give his body another 6 months to heal and then see how things look--I guess from the phone call that some of the fusions aren't healing the way the doctor thought they should--not as quickly as he had anticipated--but then he didn't expect Jeremy to be up and moving around as much as he is!! Jeremy helped his dad a lot this fall putting in the corn--he was the tractor man and Dad was the gopher--talk about a reversal of roles! There was one day that he even climbed into a silo--not a wise move, but he made out okay--got out without falling out! We continue to be impressed with his ability to get around--still uses the cane, but can go across the room without it (especially when the nieces and nephews steal it from him). His bus driving is going good--but he knows his limits and if he isn't feeling quite up to par, he calls in--they understand it, and admire him for not trying when he's sore and doesn't feel he can drive safely.
Saturday will be his one year anniversary--a day that probably won't leave my memory anytime soon! We will be spending the day with friends--thanking God for our miracle!! We will also reflex on those we have met along the way who have been in the same/or worse situations as Jeremy and ask for prayers for them! It's funny how tragedy brings people together and makes them friends.
As we come to the season of thanksgiving, lets remember to thank the one who matters most!! Thanks again for your loving thoughts and continued prayers--someday we will be 99.9%! Yes, the kids were glad to have him back--even the parents came out to say Hi! He went back to Syracuse this past Friday to meet with the researchers and to have more CAT scans done of his back. The research appointment went good--they are still in the planning stages, so we aren't sure what is going to happen or when, but will keep everyone posted. The CAT's also went good and he got to see the films when they were done--he really wanted to see what his back looked like now with all the titanium! The good news is they don't think he will need the additional surgery that was orginally thought would be necessary. That's a relief for us all--Jer didn't want anymore surgery, and I certainly didn't want to sit in another waiting room!
The farm is in motion again as we are putting in corn now. The last couple of weeks, we pushed hard to get in some more hay (and the weather cooperated for a change). If you get to go by the farm, you will notice the new addition of the sausages (the white tubes in the field)--these are supposed to make farming a little easier on both Ron and Jeremy as they won't have to climb silos during the next year. You'll also see a new bob-cat loader roaming around the farm--we finally found one with hand controls for Jer that make it much easier for him to do farm work (now there is no excuse not to be in the barn once in a while).
Well, I will keep you posted as new things come up--until then, Happy Fall--lets hope it's a long one--I dread winter!!
Carm

WOW---summer's almost over!

Sorry it has been so long since the last update--summer has been a whirlwind around the farm, and in Jeremy's life. First, we would like to Thank Mike Tomassi and his family for putting together the Motorcycle ride! It turned out to be a great day--after one postponement, and Jeremy was Thrilled to be able to ride with everyone. He scares the hell out of me when he does things like that, but it's his determination that is getting him where he is today!! Things continue to go good for Jeremy. He is now walking with just his Grandfather's cane! He has passed all the necessary testing to return to driving school bus. He has an automatic bus, so the driving part will be easy for him--the kids might pose a challenge, but he's used to that, and they all WANT him to be back, so maybe they will be good for him for the first week!!! He goes back to his neurosurgeon in Syracuse on Friday--this time he will walk into the office. The last time he could have walked in, with his crutches, but he chose to ride in--didn't want to upset the good doctor. We have recently acquired a hand-controlled bob-cat, so now he can put in some more time in the barn. He could drive the other bob-cat, but wasn't comfortable with it--the foot pedals are hard to press, and all the motion is controlled by them. He has helped out with the field work this summer--cutting , baling and moving hay bales. The only thing he didn't do was help put the hay into the mow. He did some "directing" from the ground though! The Gator has certainly been a big help to him this summer--it gets him from his apartment to the tractor, to the barn and out to check fields. For some reason, it hasn't found it's way to the sweet corn patch yet though (He never did like picking sweet corn). For Empire Farm Days, it was his transportation around the show, and the mode of transportation back to the truck for the things he and his dad bought at the auction. Almost every day, he comments that it's one of the best "gifts" he's ever received.
Each day brings a new sensation to Jer's legs--some days he gets a lot of tingling, and some days none--we are still hopeful that he will get full feeling in them before long. One of the doctors told him that up to 18 months might be required to get things back, so he has more time yet.

As for Ron, he is doing good--it's been a rough summer for him without Jer's full capacity, but he has done okay--getting some kids who wanted to help out. Today he had a Doctor's appointment and the bloodwork is looking good. Next week we go back to the Cancer docs and they will do more indepth blood work to see where the "mutated" cells stand. The treatment he is on still tires him out, but that is to be expected--he just goes to bed earlier!

We still thank you for your continued prayers for Jer and Ron and ask that you include in them our friends--Dana Carr and Bobby Franklin. Dana is a parapalegic that we met through Val's work, and Bobby is like another son to us who was diagnosed with cancer just recently. That's 3 YOUNG MEN who desperately need prayers. Thanks again. I will post again this fall after we see how things go with the bus driving and the doctors appointments.

Carm

Happy Memorial Day

Well, we did it, we pulled off a total surprise for Jeremy last night. Thanks to the Horseheads American Legion, Jer now has a new "tool" to use around the farm. The Legions across the State of NY donated to help buy a JD Gator for Jer. He was invited to the Legion for a "small sign of appreciation" for something he had done in the past, and when he walked in, he realized that everyone knew something that he didn't know! He was "blown away" when the gator was driven into the legion! The wells wishes and hugs were overwhelming. His smile was hugh! Now he has no excuse to not help chase cows :)) Today, Monday, He will be in the Horseheads Memorial Day Parade with his Grandpa (who couldn't be prouder).
Other than that, his spirits still remain very high, and his detemination level higher than ever. He has been helping out with some welding around the farm, and doing some planting. He finds that a couple of hours in the tractor is about all he can muster at a time though as it's kind of rough on the back. Last week he told his dad that his next goal is to be back driving bus in September--now that is a goal for someone who was told they'd never walk again!
We'll continue to update as new things happen--or at least once a month! We'd like to take this to the point of him walking on his own--and we will see that day-- maybe sooner than later!! Again, as we have said in the past, none of this could have been possible without all the prayers and thoughts from people like you! Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts.
One other note, Ron is doing better--his blood work is showing improvement--they tell us he has 3 stages of remission to go through before they will declare him in total remission, and we are hoping to reach stage one before the end of the year--maybe he will progress faster like his son!! Love to you all!

Benefit Ride postponed

HI ALL: Just a note to let you know that the ride scheduled for May 17, has been postponed to May 24th at the Odessa Fire House--registration is 8-10, ride will begin promptly after registration. For those of you coming from the North country (Syracuse, Rochester, etc) there will be a stop for lunch at the Petro (just down from the Outlet Mall in Waterloo), so if you wanted to join the ride there, you could do that and then ride the west side of the lake with the group. Of course, you are invited to come to Odessa first, and if you chose to leave at the petro, that's possible too. The plan is to arrive at the petro between 11:30 and 12 and leave from there at 1:10. If you need any information next week, please feel free to contact me at 607-857-5726 and if I don't have the answer, I will make sure I get it and get back to you!
Now for Jeremy's update--he is doing so many things that the doctors NEVER thought he'd do again! We are so proud of his drive and determination that it brings tears to my eyes when I think of how far he's come in just 7 short months. Yes, it's been 7 months tomorrow. For us the time has flown, but I'm sure for him it's been the longest 7 months in his life. One of the things he's found he can do is ride motorcycle (very cautiously though). He is riding his sister's honda low-rider and can balance that pretty good. What a shock on Mother's day to see him ride up the driveway on it. The only problem is getting off and carrying his crutches--but he will overcome that obstacle too!
This past week has been a busy one on the farm--Jer and Ron planted corn all week, while Zach, Chris, Val and Niki helped load planters and run supplies hither and yond. It was nice to have all the help as we are now all planted and just waiting for the 25th to start cutting the first crop of hay. That process is changing too as without Jeremy's ability to climb silos, we have to change how we put up haylage, so we are using the big white bags that look like sausages in the fields, so we have had dozers and rollers in getting that site ready.
Ron is doing better--his blood work is showing improvement. We have another doctor's appointment in June and hopefully we will continue to get good news.
Well, that's it for now--thanks for continuing to check in. God Bless

May, 2008

Hi all: Sorry it's been a while since we've updated--everyone has been busy with the "spring things" around the farm, Jeremy included. Yes, Jer is able to help out on the farm on occasion. He can drive most of the tractors, so he can spread manure and do some plowing, discing and hopefully some planting very soon. Jer's progress still amazes all of us. He is able to take a few steps without using the crutches, which is a very big step for him. He still has the wheelchair around "just in case", but doesn't use it much now. With just 6 months past, we have come a very long way! I'm sure there wasn't a doctor out there that thought Jer would come along this quickly, but then maybe they never met a Hoffman before! Driving is coming along pretty good--he still uses the hand controls most of the time, but tries his luck with the feet once in a while too. It is surely nothing he could do for an extended period, but for very short distances he can use the feet. In my mind, I can't help but think that it helps to retrain those muscles/tendons to do things they haven't done in a while.
Sorry for the short post, but I think I've covered all of the important things. We'll continue to post as things come up that we think everyone will be interested in. Thanks again for the prayers and thoughts during these last long 6 months. I for one know I would never had made it through without the friendships, thoughts, and prayers!! Love you one and all. Spring has arrived and with it the spring field work that Jeremy has been setting goals on! AND, he did get into the tractor and plow one field. He admits that it's not easy, but he did it anyway. This week he is off to Tennessee to visit with Matt and Kristi--his first experience with airports since the accident. Wow, that's different--of course he lit up their machines like a Christmas tree when he went through with his braces on! The tore the wheelchair apart to make sure he didn't stash things in the wheelie bars or arm rests! Then there was the Pat down! I don't think they left off one inch of his body! He took it all good humoredly though--what else can you do?
When he gets back home, he's eager to get back into the tractors and help plant. He probably won't get home in time to plant alfafa, but he'll be here in plenty of time to plant corn and do the first cutting of hay!!
His therapy continues to go good and he continues to make progress. He says his knee is getting stronger, and the surgeon has released him from his care. Unless he decides to go back and have the other ligaments fixed, he won't need to go back. From what he was told, unless he decides to become a runner, he can do without the surgery, so he probably won't go back, but time will tell.
His neurosurgeon (not the one who did the surgery) is having him go for some MRI's to see if everything is still in place now that he's been moving so much. He thinks there might be a higher vertebrae that is causing some issues with the stiffness, but it's not something that they are too worried about. Those appointments are all next week, and then it will be two weeks before he goes for the results.
His driving is good. He goes all over--he drives to Syracuse by himself, and all around town. He's been Zach's transportation lately while Zach had his wisdom teeth out in Syracuse.
We haven't gotten the final total for the benefit at the Community Center, but it's someplace in the $10,000 range. Not bad for such a crappy weather day!
For those of you who are motorcycle riders, the Fire Department is planning a motorcycle ride for May 17, 2008--it starts at the fire house in Odessa and will be going around the lake--which lake I'm not sure, but it should be a nice ride--rain date is the next week.

Well, have a good week and enjoy our wonderful spring weather. I know I'm anxious to get out and work in the yard and flowerbeds! I've had enough winter and cold weather.
Carm

Happy Spring

Well, almost spring--the calendar says it is, but the temperatures surely don't. Things continue to progress slowly. Jer is now practicing to walk with one crutch--he does pretty good, but has biffed it a couple of times! Oh well, just get up and keep going! He has been doing a lot of "paperwork" for the fire department--seems he can go and sit to do it, so why not?? The membership voted to give him his 2nd assistant chief position again, which made him feel that they have confidence in him and his ability to walk again.
His attention has turned to spring planting and field work lately. He is determined to be in the tractor helping his dad just as soon as the fields are ready--and with what we have seen already of his determination, I have no doubts that he will be out there!!
As for Ron, things are still going okay for him. He has some testing to go to this coming week in Syracuse, but that is just preliminary tests and don't seem to be a big deal. He still feels good and is back to work full time driving bus and milking cows, so that is a good step.
For now that is about it--take care and don't pull too many pranks on people on Tuesday!!
Carm

Happy Easter

Thought I'd update today before I forget again (like I did last week). Things have been going good for Jeremy and Ron this past two weeks. Jeremy is progressing well--to us anyway. He's walking more and using the wheelchair less. He got the chair-stair installed on Thursday, so now he can "ride" to his room and bathroom instead of having to "bump" up the stairs. He has also gotten used to the hand controls on his truck and is enjoying the freedom of having his own vehicle back again. In Therapy on Thursday, he said they had him walking with one crutch!! That is fabulous. Hopefully being on his feet more will strengthen his legs and muscles more and make those nerves respond to him more. He has also started swimming at OMCS with the women's aqua arobics class. The swimming is good for him, but the first day after tells him which muscles weren't being used!!
As for Ron, he has returned to "full duty". He went back to milking cows on Thursday, so he had one day of doing both jobs before he got 3 days off driving bus (holiday). Other than being tired, he feels good and I think he's glad to be back to milking his cows. His blood work continues to come back good so we are keeping our fingers crossed that he will continue to improve. We don't go back to the Doctor in Elmira until June. On April 4th we will go to Syracuse for some "preliminary testing" JUST IN CASE they have to do invasive procedures down the road--they want to be ahead of the game. It is only precautionary at this point.
Thanks again and still for the prayers and thoughts.
I'll be in touch again soon. What more can we say!!! The support was tremendous DESPITE the weather. We would like to thank all the fire departments who help out at the benefit, and still were able to provide needed service to their own community during the storm. It was wonderful to see everyone and if we didn't get to talk to you, we apologize! The support of the merchants, and members of the community and the Class of 1970 OMCS (yeah, Ron & Carm are that old)was tremendous. As you saw, if you came early in either session, Jeremy was up and walking (with his crutches) for quite a while. It tires him out though and he had to resort to the wheelchair about 30 minutes into it. BUT, it's wonderful to see him up and moving, and each week he gets more strength and ability to do more.
It was also wonderful to get to meet Dana Carr in person! Dana and Jeremy share a similar situation--Dana also has a spinal cord injury and is in a wheelchair. Hopefully these two determined young men can become good friends and companions! Dana has only been home a week, and his family braved the weather to come up from Horseheads to be with us! Thanks Carr family it was GREAT to see you again!

Jeremy and Ron both have Doctor's appointments this week, so hopefully we can give you some more info on them both next week.

Oh, have you seen him driving??? Yes, Jeremy has been able to get hand controls on his truck and he can drive by himself. It sure gave him back the independence that he once had and missed so much! Now he doesn't have to "ask" Mom or Dad to take him someplace, he just ambles to the truck and goes!! PROGRESS!

Love to you all, and THANKS AGAIN!!
Carm and Family

March has arrived

Hi all:
Just thought I'd take a quick moment and update you this week. Jeremy continues to amaze me with his progress. He is now using the "walking sticks" more than the wheelchair (although we keep it close in case). He got the hand controls on his truck yesterday and now has to practice to get used to them. It's neat how they work!! He continues therapy and has started to pick up some of the equipment to use at home as well. His goal is still to be able to help on the farm this spring, so he's pushing!!
We hope to see a lot of you at the benefit in Watkins this Saturday. If you are coming in from out of town, we have made arrangements at the Long House on St. Rt. 14 to give a discount--just mention that you are here for the benefit and they will discount the room.
Thanks STILL for the prayers and thoughts as we continue to maneuver through this life altering event. The past week has been one of progress again! Jeremy went to see his Neuro-surgeon and was cleared for everything. This time they even gave him his walking sticks (as he calls them). He is able to "do" stairs (somewhat) and walk around the house with the aid of these arm crutches. He finds that it really tires him out, but he's determined to continue to improve and gain more and more strength as each day passes! Because the VA isn't impressed with him going up and down the stairs on his butt, they have ordered him a "stair chair" that will be installed in his apartment in the next couple of weeks. This next week, he will start working on getting his hand controls on his truck--that will really give him his independence!! He has to go through the VA for that too, and as we all know, the government works at a different pace than most of us--although they have been really great to work with so far!
For Ron, things have also improved. He has been pain free for the past 3 days, and the message on the phone says his blood work came back good, so we are hoping that things are turning around for him. He will try going back to work this week--to drive bus anyway and then work slowly into milking cows again. Zach has been doing the milking and Josh Haller has been doing the other chores, and that has been a life saver for all of us. As usual, friends and family have come through for us again. We are truly blessed!
Have a good week! We have had a good week. Jeremy has been working on the "walking" a little more this week. He actually walked into the Dentist office on Monday--they were very surprised! At therapy, he is walking more and more with the aide of the crutches. This week, we return to Syracuse to see the neurosurgeon who did the work in his spine. After that meeting, we are hoping that he gets clearance to get his hand controls for his vehicle--that will definitely give him more independence! (of course that makes mother nervous--but I know he will be careful)
As for Ron, he's feeling better--sort of! His blood count is going back down, which is a good thing. He is still out of work for this week, but will try to go back to at least driving bus next week. The milking is still iffy--it's a lot of up and down and twisting and turning, so he may leave that to Zach and Josh for a while longer.
Thanks again for the prayers and concerns voiced!
Love you all
Carm

Feb. 10, 2008

Hi All:
Thought I'd update you on Jer's progress this week as he doesn't have internet access. He has moved back to his apartment and seems to be doing well there by himself. He's an independant sort of person anyway, so I had no doubt he'd make out okay! In therapy on Thursday, he walked 26' with the use of the leg braces and the Canadian crutches. He was so pleased!! BUT, he was exhausted--that isn't a long distance to most of us, but when you haven't walked in over 3 months, it's a long ways. On Friday, he got his own walker, and strict instructions that he can't overdo it! Dr. Grier said that one can overdo and actually go backward, so he cautioned Jer about that.
This week will be more of the same--therapy! For a change, no Doctor's appointments though.
While I'm here, I will tell you that Ron is feeling okay--he's tired (we think it's the effects of the drugs) but he's doing what he can. He isn't going back to work just yet--some of the drugs don't allow him to drive--especially school bus. He has doctor's appointments during the week, so maybe by next weekend we will have some good news--or at least encouraging news.
Thanks for the new prayers and thoughts! It helps to know that we are supported by a whole realm of people. On Monday, Ron was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. According the the websites I've been on, it is a disease that one can live with forever if properly treated. We have begun the treatment process (pills he will take at home) with hopes that it will put the leukemia in remission in a short time. He feels good, and has permission from the doctors to do whatever he feels like doing when it comes to work. He will take the rest of this week off, and then go back to bus driving next week, and working on the farm.
It was certainly a blow to our family again, but as we said after Jer's accident, we will survive and thrive with all the love and friendships we have. The family is strong and our faith will help us get through these hurdles that we have been handed. Once again, we ask that you keep us in your prayers. Jer was supposed to have CAT scans and an appointment to talk about getting the equipment so that he could drive his truck with the use of hand controls. AGAIN, that didn't happen. He has to be released from his Neurosurgeon and he doesn't seem him until the 22nd of February. Hopefully by then Jer won't need those hand controls--(I'm sure he still will, but it's wishful thinking on my part). Therapy continues twice a week for a total of 3 hours/week, and he's is making progress--even though it's small things now--but every little thing leads to one big thing eventually.
Take care and have a good week. We went to Syracuse this morning for an MRI of the left shoulder--after about 2 1/2 hours and 2 different offices, we find that there is something going on, but not enough to be worried about (that's the doctor talking, he's not feeling the shoulder pain)so we aren't scheduled to see him again until April--maybe in that time, it will clear up! Jer was fitted for leg braces at therapy. It is hoped that they will give him to stability to stand and use crutches to walk with--we are hopeful they are right!
His working at the school is going good--he enjoys being back among the kids and the teachers. Usually, he only works from 2:30 - 6 but a few days they have him come in at 11 to work the study halls--of course, he'd just as soon be back in the bus, but that is a while coming yet. In a few weeks, we go back to Syracuse for his "driver training" with hand controls--that should be interesting.
Well, not much going on other than as he says, SSDD.
Talk to you again next week. Jer is doing good--he continues to progress at Therapy, and still brings smiles to the nurses faces when we show up in Syracuse! (imagine that). Being the kid that he is, he was "bored" sitting home and just working on getting better, so he decided to see if the school could use his services. He is now an Aide for OMCS and loving it. It gives him something to do besides therapy and doctors appointments, which he squeezes into his day! The dental work progresses. Today, or maybe tomorrow, he has dental surgery planned to replace the tooth that was totally broken in the accident. He met with some new VA doctors yesterday, and was encouraged by their offers of help. And like all the docs, they were impressed with his progress to this point. The Orthopedic doc is going to take a look at Jer's shoulder in the next couple of weeks--seems that is acting up now, but the doctor thinks it may just be the stress of using it so much--he uses a lot of upper body to do transfers to the cars and such. Hopefully that is all it is and it can be taken care of with just some meds.
Well, that is about it for this week--appointments, appointments and appointments, but progress at each step of the way, so we are pleased! I already fell out of it on a sidewalk in watkins but no injuries so i just laughed it off and got back in it and moved on.
Well thats abou t all I have for this week so i will be keeping up with rehab for the week and ill update you all again next sunday. untill then take care
~Jer

Happy New Year

Hi all: Just wanted to update you like I said I would. Therapy went well last week. I worked on standing (with the aid of parellel bars) and on strength building for my legs. They were going to start some electrical stimulus on the nerves/muscles, but decided that I'm not quite ready for that yet. On Christmas Day, I surprised my family (and myself) by standing up in front of the chair using just a sawhorse for support!! It was great being in the upright position, but sure did tire me out--the muscles have a long way to go before they are strong enough to bear weight without tiring.
During the week, I've gotten out and helped Dad some--I have a power chair that gets around the farm pretty good so that I'm not stuck in the house. (my regular wheelchair doesn't do well in mud and snow). I also went bowling with the family--that was an experience. I only bowled a few frames--sure is different from a chair.
This week brings more therapy. I'm hopeful that the doctors will clear me to go to work shortly--NO, I won't be driving the bus, but I will be working at the school in some capacity.
I am looking forward to the improvements I will make this coming year, and want to wish everyone a Wonderful New Year and thank you for your support. Today was a great day for our family! We are so thankful that we are all together. Last night we spent the evening with the Pangallo family as is our tradition--again, we were very thankful to be together.
Today started as usual, the nieces and nephews and grandmother (Lois)and John and Aunt Di, Lauren and my sisters came together for Breakfast and Mom's sticky buns--ummmm! When we were done opening presents, I got to thinking that maybe I could give the family the best Christmas present ever, so I put a sawhorse (one of dad's gifts) in front of me, and hoisted my happy a-- out of the chair and I stood--only assisted by the sawhorse for a few seconds--I was by no means stable, but hey I was in an upright position and I felt good and my family was VERY EXCITED! Now, that doesn't mean that I'll be walking next week, but it sure is a start.
Lets go back a bit--my appointments with the doctors in Syracuse have been going good--the knee doctor released my weight restriction on the right knee, so that opened me up to go to work on my therapy. The orthopedic doc, released me for weight before I left the hospital, so I can bear any weight that feels good on either leg. In therapy, Ben is working with me to get some strength back into my legs--he has me standing with the aid of paralell bars, and doing a modified rowing thing with my legs.
I'm so glad to be back home with my family and friends. I "loved" my nurses, but they just aren't like being home. Take care, and I'll update again next weekend.

Merry Christmas to all! And Happy New Year too! Things are moving along good--we finally will get started with out-patient rehab today. Jer is going to Syracuse this morning to have his knee checked and then this afternoon he will be doing the fist of many rehabs! We will do our best to update everyone once a week or so from here on in--maybe Sunday nights will be a good time to do that!! Again, our family would like to say a HUGH THANK YOU for all the support you have given to not only Jeremy, but to the girls and Ron & I too.--The Bus garage has been wonderful filling in for Ron when he had to be with Jeremy, and the Town has been GREAT to me--allowing me to take the time I need to provide care--and to my Chamber of Commerce Friends--thanks for excusing me from some of the many meetings that have happened this past 2 months. It's not been a easy time for anyone, and we do appreciate everything people have offered!!! Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!! It was a busy weekend, he went and got a Christmas tree with his dad, saw a LOT of people and got to celebrate his niece's 5th birthday! Sure made her day!! He is doing okay with getting around the house with the wheelchair (today he even decorated the Christmas tree for me). He will be staying with us for a while yet--not sure when he will feel the need to go "home" but he is welcome to stay here for as long as he likes--his house is still going to be there when he decides to move back into it. We are open for visitors, but it is best to call before you come up as we are out and about doing Doctors appointments almost every day right now. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we have to go back to Syracuse for an appointment, then Wednesday he has an appointment and Friday he has another one. He is supposed to have one on Thursday, bue we are going to see if we can cancel that one! Again, we would like to THANK EVERYONE for the support, whether spiritual, financial or just plain being here for us! We truly feel blessed to live in a small county like Schuyler!! I was up and putting weight on my left leg for the first time since the accident so the muscle's in my legs are extremely weak so I will be using a wheelchair for quite awhile while I build some new muscle, but it's cool I have been learning to have a little bit of fun in the chair so i'm not too worried about it.
Well, thats about all I have for you now, I can't wait to be re-released into general population and see you all in the coming days!
see you soo,
~Jer

progress, progress, progress

well, good evening all! to say the least this has been an amazing week since my last post. as you remember tuesday I was trying to put pants on and I was being cleared to get into and out of bed. well wednesday morning I awoke to my therapist standing at the end of my bed saying "here's your clothes, put them on" so with a bit of struggling and a small amount of help I was able to get dressed by thursday morning it was a struggle but I did it on my own, and friday morning I was dressing with relative ease so I guess you could say that there was significant improvement! other things this week were some of the same stuff in therapy, stretching, light weight lifting etc... friday afternoon zach came by so the therapist had me wheel myself into the parking garage where we practiced transferring into and out of a car and of course it also went well, which prompted the therapist to say..."well I guess we need to think about getting you home now"
that being said, we are setting up a meeting wth mom, dad, myself and the therapist's, to discuss what it will take for me to finally leave the hospital and return home to all of you!
well thats what I can tell you for now and when I find out more I will let you know. again I want to thank all of you for your support during these past six weeks it has been more difficult than I ever thought I could undertake but you have made the all the difference!
take care,
~Jer

Tuesday, 11/27

HI all: Thought I'd update you on the last couple of days here at University Hospital. On Monday, I got tired of being in the wheelchair and decided to become a touch independent--so I put myself back to bed--not a bad first attempt if I must say so myself! Of course, the nurses didn't think that I was cute, but they were somewhat impressed. From there, the Physical therapists decided that I had to show them what I could do, so I spent my therapy time in the room getting into and out of bed. For OT, they gave me a pair of pants--size 40x20 to put on--it's difficult to do with one leg straight!! I managed, but with some difficulty--sometime try it--sit on the bed, legs straight and put on a pair of pants--remember that my flexibility isn't what it used to be. I also spent 2 hours with some physical therapy students who bent us, twisted us and just plain studied us! It was a good experience, but tiring. From there, it has just been plain day to day stuff--getting more independent and learning to deal with non-flexibility. Thank you all for the support you have given my family, Zach and me--it is truly appreciated. And, Thanks to those who have helped on the farm or offered to help--my only thought is that I am really glad we were done with harvest when this happened--sure did make it easier for Dad! Talk to you again soon. I talked to Jer around 7 (just before we left for the benefit) and he said things are about the same--in rehab it was the same old stuff--more stretching and then more stretching! I think he will get bored with that pretty quick--he wants to work more on the walking part, but that won't happen for a few weeks yet--he still isn't weight bearing on either leg! To those who came to the benefit, and there were a LOT of you there, THANKS! The support is overwhelming!!!! I saw kids that Jer graduated with that I haven't seen since 1999--They could have had a class reunion there were so many! We also saw a lot of our friends from near and far, as well as a lot of people that we didn't know--Ron and I walked in together, and from that point, I never got to talk to him again until after 11. Hopefully, we got to talk to everyone who had questions for us--if not, give me a call!! With therapy going the same each day, I think we will cut back on the postings for the blog to 3 or 4 a week. That way, you will get "new" events each time. UNLESS of course something happens that we want you to know quickly. Thanks again for the support.

Thanksgiving Day

Hi all: thought while I was here with Jer I'd update you all. His day has been good today--he had a short therapy session this morning, and then we all converged on the day room for our dinner. Val, Shaun, the kids and Niki and Zach joined us, which made for a nice dinner--sort of out of the ordinary for us, but never the less, we were together and thankful for the time we have had together. Tomorrow Jer gets right back into therapy pretty much full time. He has sessions from 9-11 and then from 12-3:30, so his days will be full up! But, he is looking forward to the work, and the pain that will probably come with it. There must be hurt to gain strength and mobility. I am going to show Jer how to get on to the blog so that he can update everyone when we can't be here to see him. With his schedule, we probably won't see him much during the week. Take care and hopefully everyone had/has a wonderful Thanksgiving! He said that Wednesday was a busy day for him---3 hours of rehab, and lots of visitors. In Rehab, they are mainly working on his flexibility for now. He still can't do any weight bearing on his legs, so they can't try and stand him up or anything, so they will work on getting him to bend more easily. You know how it is when you first get up in the morning and every bone and muscle just refuse to move--well, now multiply that by 34 nights in bed!! We are going to Syracuse with turkey dinner today, so will get to see him and see how he really is doing!! He can tell me anything on the phone!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving--don't eat too much, but if you do, come to Seneca Lodge on Friday night from 8-12 and dance it off!! He had a very busy day at Therapy today--nothing new, just more of the same! He was quite tired, but he knows that is to be expected! I'm sure he's seen nothing yet!!! He has quite a bit of mobility in his left leg, and is eager to keep moving with that. He has 2 more weeks before he can put weight on the left leg, and at least 4 more before he can bear weight on the right leg, so he will be doing a lot of his therapy on his back and in a chair. This was a good week to start back up because it will be a short week with the holiday, and they don't do therapy on Sunday, so he's getting off easy! I am going to try and get him hooked back up to the internet on Thursday when we go up there, but I'm not sure what the situation is on the rehab floor, so I will have to do some checking. I know there are hookups, but that's about it--you have to have a "techy" turn on the internet. Well, I don't have much else to tell you today, so I will update you again tomorrow. He is back on the rehab floor in room 2218. He has a good view of the stairs in the parking garage, so if you park on the 2nd floor, you can wave to him as you go down the stairs. Hopefully this is the move that will get him "moving" again! A reminder that on Friday night from 8-12 at Seneca Lodge, there is a event of which a portion of the proceeds will benefit Jer's medical expenses. There is a $5. cover. Maybe we should all go and dance off some of the turkey and apple pies that we are going to devour on Thursday!! I will post more about Jer's happenings tomorrow night after I get to see him and talk to him about his day. He is doing well, and says to tell everyone hello and thanks for the support. He got the stitches out of his back yesterday, and tomorrow he will get the rest of the staples out of his knee. So, for the first time in 4 weeks he will be "stitch free"! Must be some sort of celebration for that don't you think?? They are still using the CPM (continuous passive motion) machine on his knee--right now, the bend is set at 90 degree bend. He doesn't seem to have any problems with the movements, so hopefully that means that it is healing appropriately. He is hoping to be in rehab by Monday or Tuesday, but time will tell. Hopefully he will be there by Thursday otherwise, we will have to all sit around his bed to have Thanksgiving dinner (could be interesting). The movement in his left leg is very pronounced now--and we are excited about that--of course, any movement is good, but this is wonderful. The right leg has some movement, but it's hard to tell how much as if he's not in the machine, he's in a straightleg brace. He can move the leg from the hip, so I would say that is good. Will post more tomorrow night--maybe have more news about possible move. Love to you all. Niki and Tim your house has been a Godsend to us--it's been nice to go and get a shower, a nice bed and still be close to the hospital when Mom felt she just couldn't leave! Larry Jaynes and Tom Brace, Justice Dale Jaynes and the residents of the Town of Catharine--for allowing Ron and I the time we've needed--and Larry you get an extra thanks because we know you are short handed, and then when the 2 Hoffman's take off, it leaves you scrambling!! To Chris, Val, Peggy, Aubrey, Robin, Todd, Taylor, Derek, Mark, Bobby and Becky & and my "queen" Lisa--where would I be without friends like you guys?? You have stepped up to help in the creamery when I needed you most!! Pat and Frank and everyone one else who has brought in meals--the meals have helped to take the stress off everyone--and it's wonderful to come home and find a meal in the frig! All you cookie bakers--the cookies have been a welcome treat to Jer and everyone who visits! Jeff & Jackie, Joelle, Jen, Nick, Rick & Kim, Crippen, Don & Mary & Gunner, Jackie G.--your support and visits have been a real moral booster to Jer--even when he is in a "pissy" mood, he seems to brighten when you show up!! Everyone who has visited, called or texted, Jer appreciates every second of your time. Val, he loves your "between class visits" and does appreciate seeing you even if he sometimes seems preoccupied!! I know I have left people out, and it's not on purpose! Please remember that our family appreciates EVERYONE of you more than you'll ever know. As we come on the Thanksgiving holiday, I know our family has a lot to be thankful for--we still have Jer among us to help brighten our days, and we know that with all the prayers, he will be back home on the farm before we know it!

Friday--one month later

Good evening! I spent today with Jer, and saw a lot of improvements!! Some I was expecting (his sister let me in one them) and some I didn't know about! He is able to pick up his left leg and then put it back down without it "falling". That is a BIG improvement! Today, started a new series of "tests". He has agreed to be sort of a guinea pig for Spinal Motor conduction and Recovery After Human Spinal Cord Injury. The purpose of the testing is to help better understand the manner in which muscle strength and nervous system function recovers after spinal cord injury. When he is all hooked up, he looks like he's ready to send signals to outerspace!! They use Electromagnetic stimulation to see how different muscle groups respond. It was interesting to watch! All the time they are conducting the tests, they have Jer hooked up to a computer that is recording things and a bigger computer sort of thing that records others things. They didn't say much about what they saw, but I'm sure they have to take it back to their lab and analyse the recordings. I'm not sure how many times they do this, but according to the paperwork, it may be something that they will want him to participate in even after he is back home. Time will tell. There was another CAT scan again today to check the status of his back and the spinal fluid leak--they didn't give any results on that either! He did say that he hasn't had a headache, and headaches are a sign of a leak--so that is good news. His therapy at this point, is getting up and into the wheelchair a couple of times a day. He'd doing good at transfering from the bed to the chair and back with minimal help--this afternoon, it was one nurse and I. Next week is sure to bring about some changes once the stitches come out of the back, and they talk about getting him back on the rehab floor. His knee surgeon doesn't want to let him out of his care for a while yet, so we will start rehab back on 2N. Have a good weekend!
Carm

Thursday, 11/15

Hi all: I talked to Jer by phone today, and he told me he was up in his wheelchair again. That had to feel good to him after almost 2 weeks of being flat. He said that they put a different kind of "stockings" on his legs, but didn't wrap them with the ace bandages. I asked how he was doing, and his response was "I'm still sitting, I haven't passed out yet, and it's been 15 minutes". Leave it to my son to be "cute". Remember I told you the nurses love him--one them even brought in her computer for him to use to check his email!! Of course, he had my laptop to use, but it makes it nicer to use the one from the nurse!! One of the nurses yesterday said that they weren't going to let him be discharged--they want to keep him forever!! Of course, we aren't going to let that happen!! :) We still aren't sure when we will be heading back to rehab, but it will be soon I'm sure. We will have more for you tomorrow as we are going back to see him again. Each new day makes us more and more appreciative that we live in this wonderful County! The support that we have received both financially and physically has been overwhelming-- We love you all--thanks so much! The Neuro guys checked the back, and things are looking good--they are planning to leave things as they are for the weekend, and on Monday taking out the stitches. I asked when they thought he'd get back to rehab, and I got a "soon" response. I think they want to make sure things are really healed before they make that move again. The neuro guys also ask about headaches (that is a sign that the spinal fluid is leaking), but Jer indicated that he didn't have one this time when he sits up! That is wonderful news!! Tomorrow they are going to try and sit him up without wrapping his legs in ace bandages--they want to see if maybe he is able to manage his blood pressure now without them. He has a wonderful bunch of nurses, and he enjoys joking with them. They are always stopping in to see if he needs anything-- I think they like him and his humor. His spirits are up again, and that is nice to see. He gets rather tired sitting for now, but I'm sure that is because he's been down for so long. Well, that is about it for tonight. Thanks all! He said that they took the spinal drain out today, and everything looks okay at this point--it's just a wait and see game to see if the fluid builds up again. Hopefully it won't!! They also changed the degree of bend on his knee today--only a little more. They are taking it slow for now. He said that it had been a busy day with the doctors being in and out all day, so he was tired when I talked to him. It was also the first day that they have let him sit up in over a week, so I'm sure that tired him out some. Tomorrow I will be going back up to see him, so maybe tomorrow night I'll have a little more to report. Take care and again, thanks for the prayers! For those who have been asking, Zach seems to be doing good--he is busy working for Upland Game Preserve and for us on the farm, so he doesn't have much time to just sit and think--that is a good thing--it also helps him to see Jer doing better each day! We thank you for the prayers for him too--they have helped get over the hurdles!!

Monday, 11/12

Hi All: Ron and I spent today with Jer--he seems to be doing really good. The orthopedic surgeons came in and gave him the go ahead to start moving the knee--they actually prescribed a CPM machine that does the movements for him. Today he wears it for 2 hours each shift (goes by the nurses) and it moves to a 50 degree angle and then straight. Tomorrow they will increase the degree of bend, and probably the length of time it's on. It moves so-o-o-o very slowly for now, but they don't want to destroy any of the work they have done. The neuro team came in today also and clamped the spinal drain. Tomorrow they will take him for CAT scans to see if there is anymore pooling of the spinal fluid--if not, the drain will come out and we will be back on the move again. He is eager to get back to rehab. Today, he was showing off some of the moves he can do while laying flat. He is able to (although very slightly)pull his left leg up toward his butt, and he can press down with his right foot when the nurses put their hands on the bottom of his foot. We are VERY encouraged by these movements and hope that this is only the beginning of more movements to come. Again, I say the movements are minimal, but they are movements!
I will keep you posted on tomorrows events. Thanks everyone--I'm sure the prayers have done more than we realize!! Love to you all. When I last talked to him, he sounded good. I asked him if he wanted some homemade chicken soup brought up and I got an enthusiastic YES!, so that is good. He still likes his mama's cooking!! He said that the knee surgeon had been in today and removed the brace and changed the dressing --everything looked good from that angle. Tomorrow, they are supposed to meet with us to explain what exercises he can do, and that is still on schedule. His back surgeons were in also, and didn't have much to offer in the line of when the drain would be removed, but for some reason, we think that is tomorrow too. Of course, with the neuro guys, one hand doesn't know what the other did or is doing. Dr. Lee indicated to Jer today that they did not use glue on his back, but when they were doing the procedure, they specifically said--and now we will insert the glue--oh well!
Jer said he had a number of visitors today, and it was a good day for them to visit as he had gotten a good nights sleep last night. As we press on into another week, you continued prayers and concern are still very much appreciated. Please pass on to anyone who doesn't see the blog that we appreciate their prayers and concern also.
Love to you all. He was just getting ready to go to bed and had the nurses "fluffing up his pillows" and getting his leg comfortable. Ron and I decided to stay home this weekend and see if we could get caught up on some of the "stuff". I worked the store today --first day in 3 weeks, and Ron and Zach worked the farm. We will go back on Monday when we will meet with one of Jer's doctors about his knee and what exercises he can do with it. Then, we are hoping that we can make some arrangements for rehab--regardless of where it is at this point. Not being in Syracuse, makes this a short blog tonight--but, in some cases, no news is good news. Love to you all. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Jer had the spinal drain tested today, where they went and injected a dye into the drain to see where it went. There was a small leak, so they injected some glue onto it, and hope that it will patch the leak. When he came back from the procedure, he was in quite a bit of pain, but that soon subsided--he said it felt like someone kicked his a--. He's had a few of those days lately. He is again running a temperature, but they seem to think it has to do with the spinal procedure, and they started him on Tylenol tonight to see if they can bring it down. His knee seems to feel pretty good--right now anyway. They will keep that immobile for another couple of days, and then put it into a machine that will do the movements for him. We are hoping that next week we can get him back into rehab (either at 2N again or the Bronx). Of course, he is eager to sit up and get moving again, but this weekend will be a good time for his body to heal some before we get moving! Zach seems to be doing pretty good now--he came to see Jer tonight, and they had some time to catch up--Zach has been pulling a lot of weight around the farm for Ron so that he can be in Syracuse with Jer and me. It sure is appreciated! thanks Zach!! Well, that's all for tonight--we love you all. Jer seemed to come though pretty good. Niki talked to the doc after surgery and he said surgery went well, and hopefully there will not be a need for any more. He is going to let Jer rest for the weekend and keep the knee immobile and then start moving it on Monday! Tomorrow he will have another procedure on his back. This one won't involve surgery, but they will inject a dye into his spinal drain to see if there is a leak someplace in the spinal dura (the original patch that they did on the 19th is holding very well, but they think there is a small leak in front of that one). If there is a leak, they will put some glue on the hole, and hope that it holds. His spirits were much better tonight than we have seen in a few days. Of course, he wasn't happy when they wouldn't let him eat--he had been without food since midnight last night. Then they came in and said --yes, eat until midnight tonight--then nothing by mouth until sometime tomorrow AGAIN! He is eager to get back to rehab, but he now realizes that he has to let his body heal some before he pushes it. Again, we would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support you have shown to our family and for all the cards, thoughts and prayers you have sent to not only Jer, but to Ron & I and the girls. The ligaments and tendons on the front and back are shot too, but those aren't as important as the side ones, so they can wait. He will be in a brace for a long time especially during rehab, but that is okay with him! His spirits were much higher after he got the word that they will be working on him again. He is eager to get this surgery done as this will allow him to get back to rehab as soon as they remove the spinal drain. The drain will stay for a few more days. Things are looking good on that now, so we will see what the neuro people think. For those of you who didn't know what hospital he was in, he is in the University Hospital in Syracuse--on Adams St. Sorry it's so short tonight, but hopefully I can give you more details tomorrow night--we should know how his surgery went by then. Thanks all--love you. They moved him to 7B18 and because that is a 4 bed room and he didn't like it, they moved him to 7B22. He finally got to see the orthopedic doctors, and they indicated to him that he basically "blew out" his right knee--all the tendons and ligaments on the outside of his knee are "gone". They are referring him to a sports medicine doctor to get that part of his body taken care of--and he would like it sooner than later. He was hoping to hear something later today, but when we left at 9 tonight, he still hadn't heard. Maybe tomorrow they will come and let him know when they will work on it. Other than that, things are going the same as before--he is still required to lay flat or at least not over 15% incline, so he isn't up and about like he was before. He also in on a 2 hour rotation schedule--every two hours, the nurses roll him for one side to the other--he is not allowed to lay flat on his back--he has to be "propped" up some so there is no pressure on the spinal incision.
My plan is to go up and see him again in the morning and then come home to work tomorrow night, so I will update you again after that.
Love to you all. Today was one of those down days, he did a lot of sleeping, which is good for him at this point. He was running a temp all day, so they did a number of tests to see what might be causing it--the docs say it's not unusual for someone having spinal surgery to run a temp. He's also picked up a cough and they were worried that it might be pneumonia, so they took chest xrays (they came out clear). When I was leaving, the neurosurgeon was going into his room, so I waited and talked with him. He is pleased with the "patch" that they put on the dura, and told us that the fluid they removed from Jer's back was not infected, so that is good. Now we just have to see where the fluid is coming from. He is back to having a spinal drain in for the next 5-8 days after which they will do a CAT scan with contrast and inject dye into the drain to see if the dura is leaking any place. As for his knee--who knows! Niki and I waited all day for the ortho guys to come in and tell us what was up, and they never arrived. Again as we were leaving, the nurse came in and said that Ortho called and said "it's broke"--now what that means is left up to our interpretation I guess. Jer said that when they come in on night rounds, he will ask questions. He's pretty good at that!! The nurse who was the bearer of all the news tonight also said that they would be moving him again tonight to 7B--Jer's response--"can't I go to 7A--I didn't like 7B" The nurse mumbled something like "me either". So, we aren't sure if he will be moved in the morning or not, most likely he will be, and probably to 7B, but lets hope not.
As I've said numerous times in the past 2 weeks, you people are wonderful--your concern and prayers have helped us get through these first 2 1/2 weeks. Without your prayers, I'm not sure God would hear just us. Jer asked the other day how he would repay everyone for everything they have done for him--I told him to get better and we would worry about repayment later as I'm sure everyone just wants to see him walking again! Thanks all--love you Carm

Post Surgery update

Good Morning, or night whichever.
This is Niki and I just left the hospital(1:20am), Jeremy did well with his surgery tonight. The neurosurgeon said that the "patch" that they did 2 wks ago looks good, and is healing well. There was a small area of infection right at the incision site, considering the pressure that is on that area all the time this is not uncommon, unpleasant but not uncommon. They have cleaned out the infected area and closed his incision back up. The neuro team has sent off cultures so that we can be sure we are treating Jeremy with the right meds and that they will be the most effective. There was some level of concern about fluid around the initial injury site, and concern that it may be a CSF(cerebo-spinal fluid)leak from in front of the patch itself.... what does all this mean? It means that Jeremy will have the lumbar drain again for at least 5 days and that the neuro team will be keeping an extra close eye on Jeremy's care and progress. In 5 days the team will re-evaluate the drainage issue and repeat another CT scan. That is a bridge that we will cross when we get to it, but in the mean time... we wait. I have also left word that we would like to speak with the orthopedic team tomorrow morning and if Jeremy is going to be laid up for 5 days with the lumbar drain then we want the knee fixed ASAP, then maybe we can get back to rehab with all parts working and stable. We will see where we get with that.
When I left Jeremy he was still in the recovery room but doing well, he has increased pain in the back incision and they were keeping him medicated for that. He has a room reserved for him on 6J I believe, but as always we will update that as soon as we have official confirmation. Thanks You again from the bottom of my heart for all your thoughts, prayers, and help provided.

Sunday 11/4

In life there are always the ups and the downs--today we had one of the downs (probably just the first of many). Jeremy found out this morning that he had torn the ACL on his right knee (now remember that is the only leg he can bear any weight on for a while), and he also found out that he has to go back to surgery tomorrow to have his back "flushed". I'm not sure what that all means, but I don't like the sounds of it. I do know that the incision on his back has not healed the way we thought it should, and finally today, someone else noticed! He has been complaining about his knee for over a week and on Friday, the one doctor decided that they should xray it to see what was up. We aren't sure what they will do with the knee just yet--they fitted him with a brace for now, but this sure will slow down his therapy. I will be going back to Syracuse tomorrow morning, so I will keep you posted! I would imagine that this will mean another transfer, so he will probably have another room number shortly--again, I'll keep you posted. I am praying that they don't find a lot of problems when they go into the back again, but only time will tell. Take care and keep Jer in the prayers while he goes through this next round of surgery. Love to you all. Ron & I got to spend a good share of the day with Jer today, and participate in his therapy. It was good to see him doing the exercises they giving him to do. He is truly a fighter and works hard to do the things the therapists ask. As he works, it is evident that the muscles are trying to do the job--now they just have to do it! Everyone seems to be surprised at his progress. As you see by the picture, we got him into the recliner for a while today. He said it felt good to sit in a real chair again. He is getting pretty good at transfering from the bed to the wheelchair and back. He still needs some help as he can't get his legs off the bed just yet by himself, or back on but, I'm sure that will be the next thing he works on doing.
Just as a friendly reminder, the nurses in our family want me to remind everyone that when you go to visit, not just Jer but anyone in the hospital, with the spread of that nasty virus that seems to be everywhere, to please use the hand sanitizer just outside the door of most patient rooms. It is especially important with those who have incisions such as Jer has.
I will be calling his case worker on Monday to see is she can narrow down his transfer to the Bronx, but until then I still don't have a time frame for you. I'll post the date as soon as I get one.

1st full day in rehab

Good Evening everybody, sorry this is so late coming in the evening.I left Jeremy about 830pm and he had definitely had a long day. Jeremy spent several hours today in either the gym or with the therapists and is working really hard at improving everyday. He is moving both legs and a little more everyday is what we hope all hope for. Jeremy wanted me to relay a message to all of you.... so here goes
I want to thank everybody for their thoughts and prayers,as well as the help that everyone has offered and provided. I am getting a little better everyday and hey... I moving my legs that's what counts, right!
I am going to keep it short for tonight because I am sleepy and can't seem to put together sentences that make sense. He is excited to begin the rehab portion of his recovery. While I was there with him today, he showed me how he can move the legs (very little in one, a little more in the other)and he did better transfering from his bed to his wheelchair. This floor he is on is much better about "making" him do for himself than the other floors have been. He got out of bed and went to the patient dining room tonight for dinner--the first in 2 weeks, so he got to have a conversation with other patients. His new room number is N2210 (2nd floor). His new roommate was riding a motorcycle when an SUV turned in front of him--he and his girlfriend are both in the unit, and have been in the hospital since September. Tomorrow will start Jer's therapy in earnest--he has 3 sessions in the morning and 3 in the afternoon (9, 9:30 and 10:30, 1, 1:30 and 2:30). I have to guess that after that he will be really tired--at least for the first day or two. Sunday is the only day of rest on this floor--they work for the other 6 days. We are looking to transfer him one more time and that will be to the Bronx VA--one person told me it would be early next week, but someone else said in a week or two, so who knows. I guess we will just wait until we get concrete information before we make any plans. Cards can be sent to the same address, University Hospital, Attn: Jeremy Hoffman Rm. N2210, 750 E. Adams St. Syracuse, NY 13210. Love to you all. December 2 at the Mechanics Club a breakfast is being planned--meeting to set this one up is Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the OMCS Cafeteria. December 7 the Buisch's Bullpen (the Melting Pot to all of us) is sponsoring a benefit. Ron and I came home last night-it's the end of the month, and there are reports that have to be done, so we spent the day catching up! Then the phone call came from Jer--"Do you want some good news?" he asks--well that was a dumb question! Certainly we want good news--I figured they had finally gotten to go ahead to move him to rehab--but not that--he actually MOVED his legs. He can move the right leg better than the left, but the muscles in the left are telling it to move. The therapists are very pleased with his progress so far--especially considering that he gets only 20 minutes of rehab a day right now. We are still waiting for word from the Bronx, but he told me tonight that they expect to hear tomorrow from them. Lets hope so. It would be nice to get him into rehab so that he can be home for Christmas and maybe even Thanksgiving--of course he'd like to be able to go hunting--even if it's in a wheelchair for this year.
Will update more tomorrow night after I get to see him again. We are beginning to see some movement in Jer's legs--not a lot, but some--and everything starts with small steps. The rehab therapists all say that they can see the muscles trying to do their job, so I am encouraged by that. We are praying now that it will continue and get stronger each day. We still haven't settled on a rehab center yet. Jer would like to take advantage of his Veteran's status and go to the rehab center in the Bronx (they seem to have a speciality of Spinal rehab). If he has to wait to get into there, he will stay in Syracuse at the University hospital but will go to what they call 2 north. It is the "inhouse" rehab center. We were hoping to hear from the VA/Bronx today but didn't be the time we left Syracuse at 3:30 today. (yes, Ron & I came home for a while!) Hopefully tomorrow we will hear something more positive and can get moving. The longer we wait, the longer it will take him to recover! I know a number of you haven't seen him since he was hospitalized, so I am including a picture of Jer and the family on Sunday. It was the first day that "we" got to take him outside or even off the floor, so it was a big day for us (and him)--and besides, he had the nieces to help him with the wheelchair. And with that all said, we still haven't come up with a decision on where to have Jer rehab!! We think we have narrowed it to two places, but not really sure. Jer did well today, he was up in his chair twice, and felt pretty good both times. He did make it to the gym today, and they worked with him for about 20-30 minutes. Small things for now, but none the less, it was activity! Tomorrow, we are hoping that the VA doctors will get to see him and evaluate him for a possible move to the VA center in the Bronx, (of maybe Syracuse--although that is not our first choice). We thank those of you who make the trip up to see him. Jer does enjoy your visits. Sorry it's so short tonight, but there really isn't much to report. The important thing is that his spirit still is good, and his will has not changed! Maybe tomorrow night I can give you an idea of where and when we will be moving to a new place. Thanks again for the concern and prayers. We got to go outside and down to the cafeteria for a while. All in all, he was up in the chair for over 1 hour. We did wrap his legs and abdomen and that seemed to be the trick. His sensations in his legs seem to be increasing somewhat, but he has lost a lot of the swelling and puffiness that he was experiencing! Ron and I are going to be on the phone in the morning to see what Rehab center will accept him, and then we hope that it will be a quick move to wherever so that he can get going on the important stuff. All of his doctors seem to think that as far as his "trauma" is concerned, he is healing just fine. I know Jer was happy to see everyone today and especially because he felt good about being in a chair! The nieces were VERY HAPPY to see their Uncle Jer! Again, our whole family thanks EVERYONE who is in any way helping out! Each day you continue to amaze us with your caring! Love you all--Carm

Saturday- 10/27

Today turned out to be a pretty relaxing day for Jer and Ron and Carm--we had some visitors, not a whole lot today, so we got time to chat and work on setting in his chair. There is still an issue with his blood pressure dropping when he gets into the chair, but we have some ideas to help that--tomorrow the nurses will try some new things to see if it helps. They will wrap his legs in ace bandages and wrap his abdomen too. They think this will help to keep the blood in the upper portion of his body and that should help keep the blood pressure up.
Jer was glad to see Becky Tong Murdock--she came up from Pittsburg to see Jer and her dad. We haven't seen her in a long time, so it was a pleasant surprise to see her in the hall! Ron and I can't say enough to those of you who are helping to keep the "home fires burning"--oops I probably shouldn't say that to the firefighters huh?? Lisa, Peggy, Aubrey, Zach, Karen, Chris and Val--you guys are awesome! The work you've done for us is enormous and we don't know how we can ever repay you!! On another note, I got to talk to Tammy Kellogg today, she is such a wealth of information about the rehab stuff! Tammy's son is the boy who dove into the pool and injured the spinal cord. Along with getting into the chair tomorrow, we will really hit the rehab information and try to make an intelligent decision about where to go. There are a number of options, but it will ultimately come down to Jer's choice.==oh wait, his choice is at Johnson's or the OH--but I don't think they have the appropriate type of rehab!! We do Love you Jer!

Friday--one long week later

Hi all: We spent the later half of today with Jer. He was sitting up in the chair in the hallway when we got there--we weren't sure if he was happy to see us or if he was "high" on drugs, but he was waving away!! They took him down to the gym, but the movements make his quezy, and his blood pressure takes a dive to the cellar, so he didn't get to do any exercise, but at least he got to take a tour around the gym to see what they have to offer. When the brought him back to his room, they decided that he needed to be on another floor--so, he is now in 7A326--with all the moving, he got quite tired and wanted to get some sleep, so his company left--we said goodbye and of course, Mom tucked him in!! As usual, he is sucking up to the nurses! Some men never change!! But, we love him just as he is! talk to you all again soon.

Thursday night 10/25

You people are unbelievable!! I can't even phathom the support we have received from everyone! Ron and I came home tonight for the first time since Monday for the induction of Ron's Dad into the Hall of fame. Jer really wanted to be here, and I was his standin--I took pictures and video for him. When we left today, he was waiting to see the physical therapists--AND, they showed up and took him to the gym. You can imagine that made him very happy because any of you who know him well know that he isn't the type to sit around and do nothing for even a few hours, so to be down for 7 days has been a killer for him!! We still don't know where he will be going ultimately for therapy, but I have certainly looked into a lot of places--the biggest thing is to get him accepted at some of them. Thanks to all of you who are looking into therapy places for us! I do appreciate it!!! I'll keep it short tonight--the girls have done good updating today--Val thought it was important that she post the pictures of him so that everyone will see what he IS GOING TO BE LIKE AGAIN!! All that fun loving, smiling Jer can't be gone forever!! A lady in the waiting room for the ICU told us that God loves those who smile and as you notice, in every picture there is a smile on his face! We will get it back with God's help and the support of all of you! THANKS! Love to you all.

<img style="display:block; This post is not going to be about Jeremy per se, Its about all of you. I sat yesterday and tried to start writing "thank you" cards, and realized that my hands would fall off before I got them all written. I started a list of everyone whom we wanted to thank and the list was endless! With that being said, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! From right at the beginning of this whole ordeal we have been given the love and support that is needed to come through this with strength and composure.
This is the short list, but a list of whom I would like to publicly thank at this point....
>Zach- for getting help on its way and never leaving Jeremy's side,
>Schuyler County Sheriff's Dept for prompt efficient dispatch, and response
>The Odessa Fire Department- Our other Family, nothing but the best. 'nough said
>Guthrie Air- Knowledge is power, Thanks You Kristy Diffenderfer-Stewart and crew
>Schuyler Ambulance- For being there and making the tough decisions! Keep up the good work.
>Arnot ER staff- Once again, nothing but professionalism and knowledge
>Mercy Flight Central- For the best Co-workers in the entire world! You guys are awesome! Your skills and knowledge encourage me daily!
>Upstate ED staff- The best of the best
>Jer's docs and nurses- Jeremy was brought to Upstate for a reason and its because you do what you do and do it well. Thanks
---Now for some more personal one's
*Jeremy for being the "rock" that you are and for keeping us positive and strong.
* Mom, Dad, Chris, Val, and Families for picking up where its needed and keeping everything running smoothly yet always seeming to be in Syracuse. Can't say enough.
* Joelle Cannon, Jen Wilson, Crippen, Fraiser, and Gunning for being as much support to us as you are for Jer. Your friendship to not only Jer but to the family is what dreams are made of... Thank You will never be enough.
* Kelly Brimhall Thank You for being the shoulder to cry on! I never would have made it through the weekend without you! Thank God for Vital Signs. ;)
* To the love of my life Tim, I Love You and Thank You for allowing my family to "take over our house", and for being so patient with me.
**To All my friends that I have spent countless hours with on the phone, your patience, and Love can never be repaid, but know that I am always here for you.

I know this is supposed to be about Jeremy and believe me, every thought I have is about Jer and what we can do to help him heal and get on the road to recovery! But, I had to find time to say Thanks to everyone that has been supporting this family night and day since last Thursday. I was definitely brought up in the best community in the world and truly feel blessed to have so many people that care about us! We will never say it enough Thank You! I know that I have forgotten people, and it is by no means intentional, Please consider yourselves thanked and loved!
Until the next time, thoughts and prayers, and we love you all. I am sure that Mom will update later today... as soon as she has any news and gets back to a computer, it will probably be this evening. I think that Mom and Dad will be heading home for the night, so that makes updates a little later in the day. Keep the faith! He can't start physical therapy with the drain, so again no gym. But, by the time Ron and I left the hospital at 8:00 p.m. tonight, his spirits were up quite a bit--he got his teeth "fixed" and they sent the physical therapists up to talk to him and also the occupational therapists. Again they say they will remove the drain tomorrow--hopefully this is for real!! Jer's friends continue to come and see him daily, and his sisters have been fantastic--but then everyone knows how they love their "little" brother!! Everyone has been fantastic, and we are very appreciative of all the support! I can tell you that even from Syracuse, we can "feel the love". I don't know if I an overusing the words, but THANKS SO MUCH!! We love you all and I think we will see your prayers working as we progress through this. I continue to look for the best therapy place for Jer with his injuries--thank you all for the suggestions we are checking them all out! Like Niki said, he is eager to get started on Therapy--they talked about taking him down to the gym today, but didn't do it--not a big surprise there! We are hoping that he can start tomorrow. Also tomorrow we start talking about where he will continue his therapy once he gets discharged from Syracuse. There are a number of options, but we have to sit together and make a decision together--I don't want to take him to Georgia or Colorado if he doesn't really want to be that far from home and especially is there is a GOOD Therapy place around here. Time will tell. He was so excited today to see his Roommate from Iraq! He drove up from NYC this morning and spent all day with Jer--he even got to go to lunch with some of my family to the Dinosaur Barbeque--and they brought some back for Jer! The nurses on this floor have already begun to love Jer--the one nurse said that he just brightens the room--but then they aren't telling us anything we didn't already know!! Well, I'll keep this one short for tonight and hope to be able to give you more information tomorrow night. Thanks for the continued prayers! Jer is determined that this isn't going to get him down, and those prayers will help!! It was definately a busy day for Jeremy. There have many of you that have made the trek in lousy weather to see him. It is overwhelming to see how many people this affects. I wanted to put the address on here so if anyone wanted to send cards or letters they had the address.
The address is University Hospital
750 East Adams Street
Syracuse, NY 13210
ATTN: Jeremy Hoffman Rm 7B-7118
I don't know about you guys but that reminds me of the "old days"... you know paper and pencil. LOL It is as scary for me as it is all of you.
Jeremy is ready and willing to get working on physical therapy, I think that if he could do therapy 24/7 he would. Jeremy did get to sit up, and he enjoyed it--UNTIL they put him in the wheelchair--he said that was a bit uncomfortable, but he tolerated it like the trooper he has been through this whole thing! The nice part about a wheelchair is that it's moveable, so the nurses took him outside to enjoy the nice weather on his birthday! It's not been many times that he could be outside on his B-day in a thin little gown!! (now isn't that a picture to behold???) Some of the nurses got together and bought him balloons to help brighten his day--then Joelle and Jen came with more balloons and party decorations so his room looked like we were ready for a "real" party--the only thing missing was the beverage of choice (beer).
Overall, he was up in the chair for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and was very glad to get back into bed. He actually got to eat "real" food today too--no more jello and broth. The nurses got a kick out of what he said the broth tasted like!! He was quite colorful!!
As Niki said, they had not moved him by 3 or 4 or 5 or 6, but think that in the middle of the night they might move him--now does that make a lot of sense?? We will hope that he is moved in the morning--they had a bed for him, but he couldn't go to the floor because of the spinal drain--he needs more care on that--so back on hold!
One of the things that all the staff at Syracuse have said is how positive and fun he is to have around--now I can't imagine that--no really, they have enjoyed having him in the unit--I think that might be why they don't have a bed anyplace else--they love him like we all do!!
Tomorrow Ron and I will be talking to the discharge people about Rehab facilities. I was surprised that they suggested it at this point, but I guess the only thing holding him from going to rehab is the spinal drain. I haven't heard any time frame about getting that out, but one nurse said it could be as early as this weekend. I will keep you all posted!
I will keep saying this until I'm blue in the face--THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR THE TREMENDOUS SUPPORT--WE LOVE YOU ALL.

Happy Birthday

Okay gang.... this is Niki and I have been given the opportunity to share that Jer is sitting in a chair as I am writing this. I just received a text from Joelle and she said that with the help of the therapists he is up sitting in a chair, he is not sitting comfortably but he is sitting up. I have to say that this is a pretty darn good birthday present.

I also have been given the duty of sharing some delicate information. Some of you that have been reading this may or may not be ready to hear what I am going to tell you all. I am sharing this info with you to help put any rumors to rest and so that we all can start to heal, understand and move on from here. Jeremy's diagnosis is "incomplete paraplegia" What this means is that Jeremy does have sensation of his lower extremities, but does not have movement. We are not sure if Jer will regain movement... and if he does what kind of function he will have. We are told by his neurosurgeon that it is unlikely for Jeremy to walk again. We are trying to remain hopeful and positive, and part of that means understanding what we are up against.

Paraplegia is paralysis from the waist down. He does have good movement of his upper extremities. The orthopedic doctor said that he can put weight on his right leg but can't put weight on his left leg, at this point because of the pin on that side of his pelvis. Jeremy is ready to start rehab and get going on his healing process.

Jeremy has orders that allow him to be moved to the 7th floor and out of ICU, but as of 3pm today he was still in ICU because there are not beds available on the other floor. Val came in today between classes and washed his hair, and shaved his face, so that Jer looks like the Jer that we are used to seeing. His IV fluids have been stopped and each time something is stopped or taken off it means that we are moving forward.

Please stay tuned to this blog for information on upcoming benefits that are being planned. As I find out more info on these I will pass it along. For those of you that have asked or are wondering Jeremy did not health insurance through the farm or as a bus driver. As some of you may also be aware Jeremy's enlistment with the military was complete July 30th of this year. Please continue sending Jer your thoughts and prayers, they are truly appreciated.

Sunday

Hi All: Today was another busy one for Jer--although they didn't do anything new, he had a lot of company (Fire Dept. members) and family--he enjoyed seeing everyone even though it tires him out--he can't believe how tiring it is to just lay on your back. He still hasn't been sat up for anything other than xrays. He did get to eat today--first time since Thurs. at 4 (as he informed us). There is a chance that he might be moved to the floor tonight, but they don't know for sure--they don't like to move them to the floor with a spinal drain in, so if they don't need the trauma bed, they will leave him in ICU for another day or two. I am going to do my best to make his birthday a good one, but not sure what we can do for/with him. The Fire Dept. did bring a balloon today, and that brightens his room some! As we continue to move ahead, we will keep you posted. Again, I can't emphasize enough how much the prayers/concern mean to us! As a number of you have said, the Prayers from Schuyler Co. seem to be pretty powerful so I am holding the faith that it will remain the same now!! Thanks again. Love to all of you.

Good morning

We have all been so wrapped up in Jeremy's injuries, but I really want everyone to remember that Zach is a part of this too, and he will need the emotional support as much as Jeremy! His day today was a busy one--they extubated him which allowed us to communicate with him, they put in a greenfield filter to help collect any clots that might be floating around in his system, they moved him, pictured him and just plain pestered him all day! He had a lot of friends come to show support, and of course the family was there. Tonight, he instructed his father and I to go to Niki's house to get some sleep--I'm sure he knew that we slept in the waiting room last night (real comfortable chairs--yeah right). He said that he just wanted to get a good nights sleep and be ready for tomorrow. When Ron left the nurse indicated that they are going to try and get him to his regular room tomorrow, and out of ICU which will be wonderful! The prognosis still has not changed from the original, but we are all coming to terms with it, and also realize that miracles happen every day and that maybe it's our turn! Of course, the surgeons are saying that time will tell once the swelling has gone away and he starts getting some therapy. I will keep you posted, or Jeremy might even decide to take over his own blog if he gets to his room tomorrow. Again, time will tell! Just be assured that we REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THAT EVERYONE IS DOING FOR US AND FOR YOUR PRAYERS! Love to you all--Carm

More Updates

Just to let you know that I left the hospital this afternoon around 230pm. As most or all of you know Jeremy and Zach were in a serious Accident on Thursday night around 11:30pm. From the scene Jeremy was flown by Guthrie Air to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira where he underwent many tests, the injuries that were found are as follows: A fractured pelvis and multiple vertebral fractures as well as some very colorful bruises, abrasions, and scrapes. The Arnot staff was "WONDERFUL" they were very concerned about Jers injuries, but were somewhat optimistic for a full recovery. At 9:30am he was loaded into Mercy Flight Central out of Syracuse (Niki's Base), and brought to Syracuse's Upstate Medical Center. He went into surgery at approximately 1pm to repair his fractured pelvis, as well as the vertebrea. Niki and Carm have been at the Hospital in Syracuse since 3pm Friday, and at about 4pm Dr. Grose (an orthopedic surgeon) came out to tell us about Jer's first stage of surgery. They pinned and plated his broken pelvis and gave him a unit of blood. The Doctor was happy with the way surgery went and has hopes that the pelvis will heal quickly. At this point he is still in surgery to correct the spinal injuries, the surgery is expected to take a number of hours, maybe up to 5. Other than these injuries he has some minor injuries, pulmonary contusions, scrapes and a few lacerations all of which are expected due the the mechanism of injury.
We are having a difficult time finding an internet connection but will update things as often as possible. We expect Ron and Chris this evening; Joelle, Zach and Allysa all joined Carm and Niki in Syracuse in the afternoon.
Zach is doing well, he has a severely sprained left wrist, and is very sore, but physically he is doing ok. We are feeling very fortunate that both boys are young, strong, and will heal quickly.
As we get information and/or find wireless computer access we will continue to update you, of course the prayers will be important and very appreciated

Love,
All of Jers family

Arrived safely at Upstate Medical

Hello Everyone,
I am really new at this so it may take a little bit of time to get used to but I will start by saying that Jeremy has made it to upstate Medical Center where they are currently taking more pictures (x-rays) and doing a whole new work up of there own.
